Just a quick thanks to the great trio of riders from the Orange County Wheelmen who let me hook up with them for the Palomar Mountain freezing descent Saturday and nice piece of ride through Highway 76 and up Cole Grade Road in Valley Center. A good crew devoted to centuries and doubles. My favorite kind of cyclists.

After doing some higher-than-usual 1-day mileage on bigger-than-usual hills around here, today is rest day for legs. Easy spin Sunday for 40 to rounded out just under 200 for week. Still need to trade kilos for watts. Time to watch late-night meals.

If you think you need to crank up mileage to get stronger, just remember a rest day is as important — if not more — than the weekly mileage number. Letting muscles recover and rebuild is something I failed to do in past seasons while looking to “go big.” This year, I’m taking the advice of those who know: former road racers, pro mechanics and a U.S. collegiate criterium champ.

Going balanced. And staying clear of snow. Palomar some at 5,700 feet.
